Torticollis Collar
For the effective management of Torticollis
The Torticollis collar is an orthosis for use in the conservative management of congenital muscular torticollis.
Features:
- Provides a noxious stimulus to the lateral aspect of the skull.
- User moves away from this stimulus to a new central, corrected position.
- Adoption of a new, central head position provides the ability to reset perception of the horizontal to maintain the correct position.
Benefits:
- Promotes active head posture correction.
- Yields better results than stretching alone. Use with stretching for best results.
- Provides stimulus to maintain the corrected head position for a much longer period of time than with stretching alone.
- Simple, effective and inexpensive.
The collar: A loop of soft p.v.c. tubing is bridged by two short nylon tubes. Varying sizes are packaged with the collar. These tubes are positioned anterior and posterior to the trapezius. The p.v.c. tubing is fastened with a velcro strap. The Torticollis collar is non-toxic and washable.
NOTE: Congenital Muscular Toricollis is usually discovered in the first 6 to 8 weeks of life. It is characterized by a contracture of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, causing the head to be laterally flexed to the affected side and rotated to the opposite shoulder. If uncorrected, this posture may lead to plagiocephaly and a high thoracic scoliosis.
